The functions of YubiKey NEO at a glance
The YubiKey NEO USB token works without drivers under the operating systems Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. All common browsers are supported. The functions are also guaranteed on NFC-capable smartphones or tablets, such as Android devices.
YubiKey NEO supports many different authentication protocols like YubiCo OTP, OpenPGP, FIDO U2F (Universal Second Factor), Secure Element, PIV Smartcard, OATH and others. Authentication is also possible via NFC (NDEF Type 4). The standard MIFARE, which often occurs in physical access control, can also be integrated with the NEO USB token. All encryption keys are protected with hardware-based Secure Elements.
The YubiKey NEO weighs only 3 grams and can be easily attached to a key ring. The connection and power supply is via USB-A port. Because there are no moving parts, YubiKey NEO is completely water and dust proof.
General functions
Each YubiKey enables secure authentication without re-entering OTP (One-time pass codes), pass codes or passwords. Thus the USB token replaces traditional Hardwaretokens, SMS passcode procedures and apps for secure authentication (e.g. soft tokens). The YubiKey USB tokens are recognized as USB keyboard (group HID = Human Interface Devices), smart card or chip card reader without additional software or drivers, depending on the application. NEO works without batteries or moving parts and is integrated in a shockproof and waterproof housing.
Yubico technology is usually integrated into the desired applications within minutes using free open source server software. The manufacturer Yubico produces the YubiKey USB tokens in the USA and in Sweden. YubiKey USB tokens are already integrated into many solutions for secure authentication, password management, secure login to computers and notebooks, access protection for remote maintenance or VPN, FIDO U2F login, content management systems (CMS) and well-known online services. The NFC function is not integrated in YubiKey 4 models.
